Independence Day Splash

Independence Day at Happy Waves looks like this: orange, white, and green floats drifting across a blue pool, a playlist that begins with classical ragas and slowly works its way toward something more festive, and families who have been coming to this pool for years treating the public holiday as a private ritual.

The pool opens early on August 15th. By 8 AM, the water is full. Children race each other to the far wall. Parents sit poolside or join them in the pool. The atmosphere is not solemn — it is celebratory, and quietly proud.

These photographs were taken across the full span of the day — from the quiet of the early morning to the full energy of the afternoon, as families arrived throughout and made the pool their own for a few hours.
