Our first official championship. Three categories, six events, children aged 4 to 16. The pool — quiet all morning — filled in the afternoon with the particular energy that only a race day produces: focused warm-ups, nervous energy, poolside pep talks from parents who had clearly been secretly training for this too.
Twenty-two awards. Every winner earned theirs. But the moment nobody planned — a five-year-old in the Beginner heat, finishing his first competitive length with everything he had, touching the wall. The pool went loud. It stayed loud for a while.
Every child who competed went home with a certificate. Every winner went home with a prize. But what really traveled home was harder to name — the proof, arrived at in front of an audience, that the early mornings and the lane lengths had made them into something.
